Getting your bracelet to fit perfectly is one of the most satisfying things you can do with a new watch. Most bracelets use one of two link systems β screw pins or press pins β and each requires a slightly different approach. Here's how to handle both.
What You'll Need
Before you start, identify which type of links your bracelet uses:
- Screw-pin links β look for a small flathead slot on the side of the link. You'll need a small flathead screwdriver.
- Press-pin links β no visible slot; the pin is held in by friction. You'll need a pin pusher tool (also called a link remover or punch tool).
Not sure which you have? Check the side of your bracelet links. A visible screw head = screw pin. No visible slot = press pin.
Both tools are available in our Watch Tools collection.
Part 1: Removing Screw-Pin Links
Step 1: Identify the links to remove
Put the bracelet on your wrist and note how many links need to come out. It's usually 1β2 links per side for a balanced fit. Mark them with a piece of tape if it helps.
Step 2: Unscrew the pin
Hold the bracelet steady on a flat surface. Using a small flathead screwdriver, insert the tip into the slot on the side of the link pin and turn anti-clockwise. The pin will begin to back out.
Step 3: Remove the pin and separate the link
Once the pin is loose, pull it out fully with your fingers or a pair of tweezers. The link will separate cleanly. Set the pin aside β you'll need it to reconnect the bracelet.
Step 4: Reconnect the bracelet
Line up the remaining links and reinsert the screw pin. Turn clockwise until snug β don't overtighten or you'll strip the thread.
Tip: Keep removed links and pins in a small zip-lock bag. You may want to add them back later.
Part 2: Removing Press-Pin Links
Step 1: Identify the links to remove
Work out how many links need to come out and from which side.
Step 2: Locate the pin direction
Press pins are directional. Look for a small arrow stamped on the inside of the bracelet β this shows which direction to push the pin out. Always push in the direction of the arrow.
Step 3: Push the pin out
Place the bracelet on a link remover tool or a firm surface with a small gap beneath the link. Position the pin pusher tip against the end of the pin and apply firm, even pressure. The pin will push through and drop out the other side.
Step 4: Remove the link and reconnect
With the pin removed, the link separates. To reconnect, align the remaining links and push the pin back in from the opposite direction until it clicks flush.
Tip: If the pin is stiff, a small rubber mallet tap on the pin pusher handle will help β don't force it with excessive pressure or you may bend the pin.
Tips for a Perfect Fit
- Remove links evenly - take one from each side of the clasp where possible to keep the clasp centred on your wrist.
- Test before fully tightening - do a loose test fit before screwing pins back in fully.
- Still too loose after removing links? Use the Slidelock micro-adjustment clasp to fine-tune the last few millimetres. Read our Slidelock guide β
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add links back in later?
Yes, as long as you've kept the removed links and pins, you can reinsert them at any time.
I pushed the press pin too far and it fell out the other side β is that OK?
Yes, that's normal. Just reinsert it from the correct direction until it sits flush.
My screw pin won't tighten β what do I do?
The thread may be stripped. Contact us and we'll send a replacement pin.
